The presentation of the wiki S4S in the press

The new science is the one who adapts to the social demands

The UA launches Wiki S4S, new participatory platform so that researchers and public professionals and deprived develop a science adapted to the social demands

EDITORIAL Under the lemma «The science only has impact if it uses », the University of Alicantepresented the Tuesday the Wiki S4S «Science for Society Solutions» directed by Barron Josep Orr, of the University of Arizona (U.S.), and coordinated by Susana Bautista, of the Department of Ecology of the UA. It treats of a platform that achieves that scientific and public professionals and deprived develop a more notable science adapted to the social demands. An incitativa effective to do arrive the scientific advances to the beneficiarios through participatory processes in which the users and parts interested, like the political managers or social agents, contribute to the exchange and transfer of the knowledge.

«It exists a problem of sensitisation and communication between researchers, professional and society and the commonly proposed solutions are ineffective and almost always insufficient. The good news is that they exist methods to optimise the impact of the science based in the commitment and the participation. The project S4S offers to the scientific community the necessary tools so that this suceda», signals Barron Josep Orr, the one who has been hired «Marie Curie» of the University of Alicante, where has developed the project «Science for Society Solutions» and has collaborated in diverse institutional initiatives in the field of the transfer of the scientific knowledge and academician.

Although they exist some wikis centred in specific scientific fields, the S4S is new in his contents and aims: spread and facilitate the use of participatory tools in the field of the environmental sciences. In this sense, «the wiki connects to the experts in participatory methods with the researchers and environmental agents that want to implement them», adds the coordinator of the project Susana Bautista.

Designed like a platform of work colaborativo and open, any one has access to the content of the wiki although it is especially headed to researchers in sciences of the environment, to the administration and agents of natural resources, small and medium enterprises, and to the ONGs of environmental nature.

Tools

The Wiki S4S provides a repositorio dynamic on participatory methods, theoretical foundations and examples of application by what all the experts and interested that they wish to contribute to the wiki can do it after a simple process of register.

In addition to reading any available material or share, transform and redistribute in any half or format, the users can incorporate videos, programs of qualification and groups of work, between other participatory tools.

The launching of the wiki S4S and his public presentation has had the support of the Vicerrectorado of Investigation and Transfer of the Knowledge of the UA represented by the director of the Secretariat of Investigation, Juan Dwells. «The platform optimises the impact of the results of R&D without forgetting the main aim of the science: improve the quality of life of the society», has remarked.

The Department of Ecology studies the population of European hedgehogs of the campus of the UA

From three years ago, the department of ecology is llevar a project of investigation (project ErizUA) of the population of European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) present in the campus of the University of Alicante. This study frames in a thesis doctoral on the adaptation of the wild fauna to urban surroundings, that uses to the hedgehog like model of study.

Between the lines of investigation of this project, includes the study by means of radius follow-up of some individuals of this population. The follow-ups llevar in the spring-summer of 2014 with aim to study the effect of the sex and size of the individual in the extension of the area of campeo of this species. For this, marked with radio-transmissive 6 hedgehogs (3 males and 3 females) that they were followed during 3 nights, during his periplos nocturnal. The results show that the areas of campeo present a clear difference between sexes, being greater in the males, and that the size affects significantly to the extension of the territories of the males but no to the of the females.

The results, have been published recently in the XII Congress of the Spanish Society for the Conservation and the Study of Mammalian (SECEM) celebrated between the 4 and 7 December in Boroughs and can consult here.

All the population is being marked individually and followed of periodic way to study his phenology (periods of reproduction, hibernation, etc) and analyse the taxes of survival and the possible causes of mortality in this type of urban habitats.

It would appreciate the collaboration of any person, student or PAS, that in case to locate a dead hedgehog or a camada of hedgehogs, put in contact with the authors of the study.

Contribution to the XII Congress of the Spanish Society for the Conservation and Study of the Mammals, celebrated between the 4 and 7 December 2015 in Boroughs.

The Department of Ecology has participated in the XII Congress of the Spanish Society for the Conservation and Study of the Mammals, celebrated between the days 4 and 7 December of the present year in the Palace of Congresses and Auditorium - FORUM EVOLUTION of Boroughs. They presented in a new oral communication data of distribution of the mole of Cabrera (Iberomys cabrerae) in the Raise peninsular, as well as his main threats in the area of study. It treats of an endemic rodent of the Iberian Peninsula, with a status of conservation desfavorable and an area of distribution very restricted and fragmentada. They presented in format poster the results of a work on frugivoría in carnivorous mammals and another on the use of the space by part of the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus). In the first has studied by part of the Scientific Station Font Red Nature the paper like dispersores of seeds of the fox (Vulpes vulpes) and the garduña (Tuesday foina) in the ZEC Saws of Mariola and Carrascal of the Font Red, analysing if they exist differences in the dispersion of the vegetal species in different habitats of the zone of study. In the second have given to know the results of a project of radius follow-up of European hedgehogs, llevar in the own campus of the University of Alicante. In this communication studied the effect of the sex in the dimensions of the areas of campeo of the hedgehogs and his patterns of daily activity.

Two new articles analyse the population dynamics of endangered orchids from Cuba

These articles deals with the 'problem' of working with endemic species subject to periodic perturbations. In the first case, using IPMs (integrated projection models) and making a simulation of different frequencies of occurrence of hurricanes and their impact on the population dynamics of Dendrophylax lindenii.

Jose Raventos, Elaine Gonzalez, Ernesto Mujica and Dan F. Doak. 2015. Population Viability Analysis of the Epiphytic Ghost Orchid (Dendrophylax lindenii) in Cuba. Biotropica 47 (2): 179-189 2015.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/btp.12202/abstract

The second article in this context of disturbance perodicas discussed the traditional approximation of matrix projection models (PPMs) and recent techniques are applied to analyze long-term (asymptotic) behaviour not the behaviour of populations that there arrived at steady state (transient behavior).

Raymond L. Tremblay, Josep Raventós and James D. Ackerman. 2015 When stable-stage equilibrium is unlikely: integrating transient population dynamics improves asymptotic methods. Annals of Botany, 115.

New Hypogeous pseudoescorpion of Mallorca

A new species of pseudoescorpion has been described in a cave on the island of Mallorca. An intensive sampling carried out for an entire year in the Coves de Campanet, Campanet, Mallorca, have allowed the capture of three species of pseudoscorpions. The methodology consisted in the installation of 18 traps scattered throughout the cavity and its quarterly review. It is the Coves de Campanet of a cavity enabled tourism, has surprised the capture of a new species of Hypogeous pseudoescorpion, completely blind and well adapted to the underground environment: Chthonius (Chthonius) campaneti Zaragoza & Vadell, 2013, since e.g. species tend to avoid this kind of cavities by lighting and environmental alterations. This new species two others associated with it: Chthonius (Chthonius) ischnocheles (Hermann, 1804) and Chthonius (Ephippiochthonius) tetrachelatus (Preyssler, 1790), both epigean but not uncommon species in the entrance of the karst cavities; in this case, both species, perfectly oculadas, have been favored by the artificial lighting in some deeper rooms in its colonization of the cavity. The discovery of C. campaneti represents the seventh species known for the genre Chthonius in the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands.

The importance of the study of the ecology of invasive species

Summarizes the thesis that encompasses different aspects involved in the process of invasion of exotic plant species Ailanthus altissima under Mediterranean climate. Their ecological characteristics, the susceptibility of habitats and the context of the system, with the aim of increasing our knowledge of the species and their effects on native ecosystems and the improvement in the management of this species in protected natural areas have been considered.

The invasion of a. altissima in Mediterranean ecosystems is influenced both by genetic characteristics and environmental which affect the development of the species. From anthropic use (i.e. in gardening or restoration) has invaded several ecosystems, including the riparian forests, which negatively impacts on species richness, phylogenetic diversity and multi-functional ecosystem. The most effective method to control long-term is clearing and application of glyphosate.

Creation and analysis of a network of dendrochronological of Pinus halepensis Mill. in the Spanish Mediterranean

Klemen Novak dissertation proposal "creation and analysis of a dense network of chronologies of Pinus halepensis Mill." in the Spanish Mediterranean", will allow to determine the elements that determine the distribution and dynamics of growth of various forest populations. At the same time, it will allow us determine climate stress levels that these populations are able to tolerate and thus be able to predict the impact of the change of climate in the same. This thesis will not only determine the thickness of the ring, but the various parameters involved in his training because they give key information for a correct determination of the growth of pine trees and its interaction with the environment.

The study shows that the anatomical characteristics of wood can provide additional information to that contained in the thickness of tree rings. Since the results have been obtained in contrasting sites, it is likely you can generalize in the wide area of distribution of Pinus halepensis, represent a useful tool for studies on regional scale.

Anual fluctuations (IADFs) density in the rings of trees of Aleppo Pine (Pinus halepensis) are considered as one of the anatomical characteristics of wood most promising in dendrochronology studies. Through a network of 35 sites in Spain, ranging from desert climate to the mild climate, the frequencies varied through the network and at different sites that register containing 0.3% to 33% of the analysed tree rings IADFs. IADFs were more common where and when temperatures were higher, the drought of summer was intense and the autumn was the main station of the precipitation.

OVERVIEW

Cienaga de Zapata is the greatest Cuban wetland and one of the most important and best preserved in the islands of the Caribbean, is covered with extensive mangroves, grasslands, forests of swamp and coastal vegetation. However, it is one of the least studied areas of the country, mainly due to the degree of inaccessibility of many of its areas. For this reason was the diagnosis of the current state of the vascular flora of the wetland Ciénaga de Zapata, which allowed to characterize its flora and identify the environmental situation of the ecosystem. Inventories were conducted floristic, location and environmental characterization of the ecosystem for 38 years, quantifying a total of 1370 taxa infrageneric, 708 genera and 155 families. Reported 50 new records for flora of the territory.

The most represented families are Poaceae (184) and Leguminosae (115). Dominated by grasses (47.4%), bushes (19), trees (15) and climbers (11). It listed 47 categories of threatened, of which 21 species are protected by the forest law, 80.58% are native and 35.7% synantropic. Endemism resulted in 11% and the richest in endemic vegetation is sclerophyll semi-deciduous forest (54 species), sheets sl. (51), cloud (43) semi-deciduous forest and xeromorphic coastal with abundance of Cactaceae (43). We identified seven aggressive invasive alien species affecting the wetland, as well as forest fires and poaching.

An analysis of the effects of Hurricane Ivan on Cuban orchids reveals different strategies in the responses of two species

Mujica, E; Raventós, j., González, e., and Bonet, a. 2013.LONG-TERM HURRICANE EFFECTS ON POPULATIONS OF TWO EPIPHYTIC ORCHID SPECIES FROM GUANAHACABIBES PENINSULA, CUBA. LANKESTERIANA 13 (1 - 2): 47-55.

Perturbations affect the spatial and temporal dynamics of ecosystems. The lack of long-term demographic data affects our understanding of the effects of high-intensity disturbances such as hurricanes. This paper evaluates the recovery of the population of two epiphytic orchids, Broughtonia cubensis (Lindl.) Cogn. and Dendrophylax lindenii (Lindl.) Bentham ex Rolfe, for 7-8 years after Hurricane Ivan (September 2004, category 5, the scale Saffir - Simpson). For the analysis of spatial components, we have applied the recent technical analysis techniques of dot patterns. (Se han respondido dos preguntas: 1) at the level of individuals, the height and basal diameter (dbh) were related to damage % Batman % u200Bpor Hurricane Ivan, and 2) the height of the orchids epiphytes in related individuals was ralacionadas with the damage caused by the hurricane? We have found that the damage caused by the hurricane phorophyte depends on the ecosystem in which the trees were found. In addition, the damage to individuals of B. cubensis was independent of its height above ground, in contrast to the D. lindenii . To evaluate the recovery of orchids were compared before and after a hurricane vegetative characters measures: number of leaves and leaf area of B. cubensis and the number of living roots and the average length of the root in the species without leaves with D. lindenii. Also the changes in the production of inflorescences, flowers and fruit were compared during this recovery period. Found that the vegetative parts of B. cubensis recovered, while that D. lindenii no. However, no effort, no reproductive success returned to hurricane levels for any of the species. The largest decline was in D. lindenii , probably due to a significant decrease in availability of its pollinators. The relative population growth rate from 2004 to 2012 in B. cubensis seems to indicate that the population has stabilized. However, the analysis of our data set of eight years (2003-2011) in D. lindenii shows a negative population growth. Despite an evolutionary history exposed periodic disturbances not all species of orchids are resilient.

A new study on Cuba epiphytic orchids shows that the characteristics of the tree which supports Orchid influences in effects on the consequences of hurricanes for their population dynamics
Wiegand, T.; Raventos, J.; Mujica E.; Gonzalez, E.; Bonet, a. (2013). Spatio-temporal analysis of the effects of hurricane Ivan on two contrasting epiphytic orchid species in Guanahacabibes, Cuba. Biotropica 45 (4): 441-449.

The hurricanes are the dominant type of disturbance in many tropical coastal forests. Here we focus on the mortality of orchids caused epiphytes % Batman % u200Bpor Hurricane Ivan in the National Park of Guanahacabibes (Cuba) and the subsequent population recovery. Discussed different aspects of the damage of hurricane in two contrasting epiphytic orchids, Broughtonia cubensis and Dendrophylax lindenii, three plots of coastal vegetation and three plots of semi-deciduous forest, respectively. Firstly, we have quantified the damage tree hosts for orchids. He explored if hurricane damage depend on the height, size, or the identity of the host tree. Secondly, we have used connection brand and the brand of correlation functions to carry out a detailed analysis of the spatial patterns to small scale of damage from Hurricane tree hosts and orchids. Finally, the degree of recovery after Ivan was analyzed during the six years that followed the storm.

Hosts of B.cubensis trees damage independent of height and size was, however, Ivan affects preferably large trees that are home to D.lindenii. Spatial analysis revealed a non-random structure of damage that differ between species. B.cubensis exhibited small-scale spatial correlation in the proportion of orchids damaged while D.lindenii did not. D.lindenii showed "irregular" patterns of damage, in correlation with the height, not so B.cubensis. The relative growth rate of B.cubensis for the following months 5-17 Ivan showed a modest reduction and recovered in the following years, while that of D.lindenii decreased drastically during the first year and still does not show signs of recovery. Our hypothesis is that the differences in the host, the type of vegetation that live and the characteristics of orchids, condition of these two orchids different responses to the hurricane.

"Defense of the thesis % u201cecologia and conservation of the Cuban crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer) in the % u201ccienaga % u201D Zapata, Cuba."

Roberto Ramos Targarona

Wednesday July 31, at 12 o'clock. Room of degrees of the Faculty of law.

The Cuban crocodile, Crocodylus rhombifer, presents the most threatened of the new world and the more restricted geographical distribution within the order Crocodylia. The Ciénaga de Zapata, Cuba, constitutes the last natural stronghold for the species. The natural history, ecology and status of the populations of the Cuban crocodile in the wild are virtually unknown, and possibly in the case of the less studied species of crocodile in the world. The objective of this thesis is to provide information on the abundance, distribution, reproduction and threats of the Cuban crocodile in the Ciénaga de Zapata from information collected in the wild and in conditions of captivity in the area over the past 40 years, to establish the State of conservation of the species and to implement management plans in the area. The results show that the main current risks to the population are partners with their reduced distribution area, causing factors negatively influencing the habitat, such as pollution, the transformations related to the use of resources, natural disasters and fragmentation have importance amplified, increasing the vulnerability of the species against diseaseshybridization and poaching. The implications of the results for the protection and management of the species are summarized in a series of recommendations at the end of the thesis, among which stands out the importance of involving local communities in the management work carried out in the area.

The population of DuPont Lark (Chersophilus duponti) in the Valencian Community needs a conservation plan

Held in 2011 a census of Lark DuPont in Valencia through the method of mapping, and an analysis of the recent population trend of the population. The estimated population was 44-47 males, located in five areas of el Rincón de Ademuz, where already it had quoted above. Density in these areas conform to the expected values according to the relation between the size of the patch and the density average found in the populations of nearby provinces. Comparison with previous studies reveals that the population of Valencia suffers an annual decline of approximately 10% on average, so the creation of a conservation plan is required to ensure the survival of the species in the study area.
